RIP Jesse Jackson

Submitted by ub on

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, a voice of reason, is now gone, asking American voters to keep hope alive.

Jackson, a leading civil rights figure who bridged the era between Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama, has died at 84, his family announced. They said he “died peacefully” but did not disclose a cause.

Jackson rose to prominence after King’s assassination in 1968, championing a populist vision of a multiracial “rainbow coalition” advocating for poor and marginalized Americans. Known for his powerful oratory, he ran for president twice but never achieved King’s moral authority or Obama’s electoral success.
