Have you ever wondered how many languages are spoken in the world? If you had to guess, you might say or guess 7777.

I speak two fluently, how about you? When people are asked to list how many languages there are to their knowledge, the average is only around 10. That’s because most people are psychologically predisposed to be aware of only the most commonly used or learned languages around them. And the number of written languages in the world is yet another question altogether.

The most popular ones are Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Persian, German, Russian, Malay, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Lahnda, Tamil, Urdu, Korean, Hindi, Bengali, Japanese, Vietnamese, Telugu, Marathi.

What is the actual number of languagesHow many languages are there in the world? Some may count languages by the number of countries. But it’s tricky though. There are countries with more than one official language. Take a look at Spain. If you hear Spain, you think about Spanish. But Spanish is just one of the languages spoken in Spain. The most popular tourist destination – Barcelona – is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia, and Catalonia’s official language is Catalan – and it’s closer to French or Italian than Spanish. Citizens of Spain speak also Basque or Galician.

Well, more than 7K languages are spoken in the world today. Each and every one of them makes the world a diverse and beautiful place. Sadly, some of these languages are less widely spoken than others. Take Busuu, for example – we're named after a language spoken by only eight people.
