Three weeks before midterms, "No Kings" rally aims to turn a Saturday in the streets into a Tuesday at the polls
Three weeks before control of Congress is decided, organizers of a nationwide "No Kings: Vote Early" rally are betting that a single Saturday afternoon can carry all the way to Election Day.
The rally, set for Saturday, Oct. 17, is one of several planned across the country, part of a coordinated push to link public demonstration directly to the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Organizers say the goal isn't just visibility, it's turnout.
"People show up to a rally because something moved them," said the volunteers helping coordinate these events. "Our job is making sure that feeling is still there three weeks later, in the voting booth."
The message at the center of the rally predates any single campaign: that no official, elected or otherwise, is above accountability to the public.
Organizers have paired the rally with a direct voter-readiness effort. A virtual training session, "Election Protection 201," is scheduled for Oct. 1 to walk volunteers and first-time voters through registration deadlines, polling locations and how to report problems at the polls.
The two events aren't separate, they're one plan with two dates.
