Top 3 causes of death for college students are 1) Unintentional deaths/accidents 2) Homicide 3) Suicide
According to a 2008 study, 1700 college students die each year due to alcohol related incident. Alcohol is a risk factor for all three of the above causes. Among these deaths are those due to alcohol poisoning, driving while intoxicated, homicide and suicide which may be accompanied by alcohol use subsequently causing a student to lose self-control and engage in impulsive behavior. Binge drinking, an epidemic among college students, is the practice of rapid alcohol consumption and is defined as four or more drinks in a row for a woman or five or more drinks in a row for a man. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reported that 83 percent of college students drink, and 41 percent of those surveyed report drinking five or more drinks on an occasion in the past two weeks.
