President Obama is expanding a national monument off the coast of Hawaii in an effort to protect more than 7K species and improve the ecosystem's resiliency. The area off Hawaii will encompass 582,578 square miles of land and sea.

This is a good example of community activism. US Senator Brian Schatz and native leaders wrote to the president in June requesting this designation, and two public meetings were held in Hawaii early this month.
