Winter’s First Snow?

Submitted by ub on

New York City residents are expecting some flurries during the morning commute, but the first snowfall of the season will be very light.

A “Winter Operations Advisory” was reportedly issued, allowing NYC to fill and deploy salt spreaders, according to the city’s Department of Sanitation.

National Weather Services forecasters say there is a slight chance of snow before 9 am, then a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Light and variable wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. The chance of precipitation is 30%.

Rain and snow mixed is precipitation composed of rain and partially melted snow. Unlike ice pellets, which are hard, and freezing rain, which is fluid until striking an object, this precipitation is soft and translucent, but it contains some traces of ice crystals, from partially fused snowflakes.

Tonight expect a 30 percent chance of rain before 7 pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 29. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northwest wind 7 to 13 mph.
