The New York Financial Writers Association invites its members, guests and friends of business journalism to the Elliott V. Bell Award presentation ceremony and reception honoring the 2012 Elliott V. Bell Award winner, Susie Gharib, Co-Anchor and EVP/Strategy of PBS’ Nightly Business Report, television’s most watched evening business news program. The event will take place at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, starting with a wine & cheese reception at 6 PM and award presentation at 7 PM. Named for the first president of the NYFWA, the Elliott V. Bell Award recognizes an individual’s lifetime contributions to the field of financial journalism.
Broadcasting nightly from the New York Stock Exchange, Gharib is best known for her no-nonsense interview style of corporate America’s leading power brokers, from Wall Street to Washington. Her interviews have included Microsoft’s Bill Gates, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson, General Electric’s Jeff Immelt, Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett, JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon, Ford’s Allan Mullaly, BlackRock’s Larry Fink, and Pimco’s Mohamed El-Erian, as well as former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and most of the Fed’s policymakers, and Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Gharib joined NBR in 1998 after a distinguished 20-year career working at some of America’s most prestigious print and broadcast organization, including CNBC, NBC, ESPN, and WABC- TV/New York. Gharib launched her career as a business journalist at Fortune magazine where she was a senior writer and associate editor. Her previous work includes reporter positions at Newsweek magazine, the Associated Press, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. A magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Gharib also earned her master’s degree in international affairs at Columbia University. She is the recipient of both the 2001 Gracie Allen Award as the top anchorwoman of a national news program, two Front Page Awards from the Newswoman’s Club of New York, and a Fullbright Award for furthering Global Business Understanding.

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business is hosting its annual two-day investing conference on 15-16 November 2012. This year’s conference, “After the Election: Realities, Opportunities, and Challenges for Investors,” will feature: Kyle Bass, managing partner of Hayman Capital Management L.P., Jeremy Grantham, co-founder and chief investment strategist of Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo, Dennis Lockhart, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and David Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group. Other speakers include: Porter Collins, general partner and portfolio manager of Seawolf Capital; Dr. Richard Evans, founder and general manager of Sector & Sovereign Research; Rebecca Patterson, chief markets strategist for the global private bank and institutional arm of J.P. Morgan Asset Management; and Jay Venkatesan, founder of Ayer Capital Management. The program also includes three panels on the sectors that are expected to experience the most change after the election: energy, health care and financial services.
