The home of the Bronx Bombers is opening up its doors to college football for the second year in a row.
The Rutgers University Scarlet Knights of the Big East Conference and the Iowa State University Cyclones of the Big 12 Conference will play each other in the 2011 New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Friday, December 30, 2011 at Yankee Stadium.
In light of this highly anticipated event The Bronx Tourism Council, in conjunction with the 161st Street BID, will be extending a big welcome to all the fans coming out to support their respected teams. Several Bronx establishments will be offering 10-15 percent off for students and ticket holders throughout the weekend. Fans should also be sure to stop be the welcome tent on the corner of East 161st Street and River Avenue to pick up information on what there is to do and see while you’re visiting the great borough of the Bronx.
"The Pinstripe Bowl is a great opportunity for visitors from all over the region, and in fact the nation, to come and see firsthand all that the Bronx has to offer. I would like to invite the family members and fans of both teams to take some time to explore the Bronx and discover the great things our restaurants, stores, and fellow Bronxites have to offer," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr
The 2011 New Era Pinstripe Bowl will mark the first time Rutgers and Iowa State will play each other in college football, giving each institution’s dedicated fans an opportunity to celebrate the holiday season with a unique bowl game experience in the Bronx and Yankee Stadium.
“We welcome the Pinstripe fans to the Bronx and urge them to take advantage of the full Bronx experience by coming early and sampling the wonderful restaurants providing Pinstripe Pricing to football fans,” said Marlene Cintron, President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Cooperation.
Several Bronx restaurants including The Bronx Ale House, Spoto’s, Mike Deli, and Arthur Avenue Trattoria have extended 10-15 percent off deals at their establishments for students and ticket holders from both teams.
In 2010, the Syracuse Orange defeated the Kansas State Wildcats in a close game of 36-34. It marked the first college football game played in the Bronx since Nebraska defeated Miami, also by a score of 36-34, in the Gotham Bowl on December 15, 1962, at the original Yankee Stadium.
Players, coaches, university staff, students, and fans are encouraged to visit the Bronx and take advantage of restaurant discounts, as well as the shopping, sight-seeing, and historical history that the borough has to offer which they are here for this highly anticipated event.
