MY TOCAYO

Submitted by ub on

70 years ago, my Tocayo's father scored his first hit in Major League Baseball. On that day in 1955, Roberto Clemente, a 20-year-old newcomer to the Steel City, debuted for the Pittsburgh Pirates in right field.

As stated by the sports writers, "No one could see into the future that day, but according to Puerto Rican broadcaster and journalist Luis Mayoral, 'Clemente was our (Latinos') Jackie Robinson. He was on a crusade to show the American public what a Hispanic man, a black Hispanic man, was capable of.”

A true hero was unveiled; just no one but he knew it yet. Fast forward to today, where Senator Jay Costa will offer a resolution on the State Senate floor establishing April 17, 2025, as "Roberto Clemente Day".

We look forward to a special ceremony and celebration in two weeks at the very location where this milestone took place.

And, as always, our heartfelt thanks to Senator Costa and many others who tirelessly uphold his legacy, amplifying Roberto Clemente's vision and his family's mission of Building Nations of Good.
