Which Side Are You On?

Submitted by ub on

American folks songs throughout the 20th century called for justice, dignity, and a fair shake. They voiced grievances, affirmed the value of society, and expressed hope for life in a democratic society. Are you a decent, or an indecent individual?

The following Florence Reece classic song of 1931 asks an important political question for today: “Which side are you on?”

Repeated by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg, and other folk singers conversant in this traditional music, Reece’s lyrics pose a simple question. You can either be on the right side as on the correct side or the wrong side as in being left out.

The song champions of the movement, singing songs with a passion and love for their fellow workers that rings just as true today as it did then. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joe Glazer, the Almanac Singers, and more chronicle the history of the American labor movement in stirring song.

When the other side continues to spout lies without any proof whatsoever and refuses to act in good faith when the stakes are nothing less than the destruction of the #USA then Florence Reece’s lyrics take on a new meaning.

As the days are getting warmer and America's pastime is once again in vogue, Memorial Day parades have stirred up our patriotic fervor, this is not a time for politics-as-usual. Read and the truth will set you free.

Take a long and hard look at your own character, and ask yourself what can you do to stand for truth and justice?
