The Girls in the Band

They wiggled. They jiggled. They wore low-cut gowns, along with short skirts and shorts. They kowtowed the club owners and smiled at the customers…and they did it all just to play the music they loved.

The Girls In The Band tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz musicians and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 1930s to the present day.

These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism, harassment and dealt with diminished opportunities for decades, yet they were determined and continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them.

Today a new breed of gifted young women are taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents.

NYWIFT invites you to attend a special screening of The Girls In The Band on Thursday, May 16th at Elinor Bunin Monroe Film Center, 144 West 65th Street. Screening time is 6:30pm, which will be followed by a Q&A and reception.

REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

If you see something suspicious, make sure you speak up and report it. The recent case in Cleveland reminds us that police officials work for us and it is their job to follow each and every lead the public generates.

If you've seen any crime committed, you should report all crimes so that the public safety officials can investigate. Reporting crime must always be done, no matter how small or insignificant the crime.

NYC Comptroller John C. Liu has announced that the New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS) — one of the largest public pension funds in the nation — has fully divested its stock holdings of publicly traded gun and ammunition manufacturers. The sale of these assets follows a review of NYCERS’ exposure to investments in gun and ammunition makers following recent tragedies, including the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

SMART PHONES MAKE US DUMB

Modern technology has helped us in many ways, among them dozens of new methods to gain our attention. It’s hard to talk to someone without your phone buzzing at least once.

Chances are that you will check your Twitter feed or Facebook wall while reading this article. Type a memo at work without having an e-mail pop up that ruins your train of thought.

But what constitutes distraction? Does the mere possibility that a phone call or e-mail will soon arrive drain your brain power? And does distraction matter? Do these interruptions make us dumber?

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.

The 27th Amendment is the most recent addition to the Constitution and was among the amendments that James Madison proposed in 1789. Ten of those amendments were approved and became known as the Bill of Rights, but this one languished for 203 years, making it the longest ratification process in U.S. history.

Politicians Gone Bad?

Another one has just been busted folks. New York State Senator John Sampson, who represents Brooklyn has now been arrested by the FBI and charged with embezzling $440,000 between 1998 and 2008, funneling some of the cash into his unsuccessful 2005 campaign to become Brooklyn district attorney and chillingly using a mole in the federal prosecutor's office to try and identify witnesses against him so he could arrange to take them out.

How many more corrupt politicians are taxpayers going to be paying for? The better question is why are they allowed to stay on the public payroll?
