We have become accustomed to seeing images of the Earth's swirling atmosphere from space, but fifty years ago, no one had ever seen such images. That's when the first-ever weather satellite was launched, kicking off a long line of weather satellites that have kept a continuous watch on our planet's and oceanic fickle atmosphere.

Over the past several days, 95 confirmed tornadoes and violent storms have ripped through 11 Midwestern and Southern states, leaving a path of destruction and fatalities, as well as dozens of communities without power, food and water.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has underlined the need for concerted action to end the crisis in Syria, lamenting that the international community has thus far failed in its responsibility to stop the bloodshed in the country, where he said the Government was waging an “atrocious assault” against its own people.
