The Flint, Michigan water crisis has Detroit native Aretha Franklin offering R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the people.
R&B superstar Aretha is reserving enough rooms to house up to 50 of the city’s residents in the Southfield Holiday Inn in nearby Detroit, with the Coney Island restaurant providing catering.

Flint residents who wish to apply for the accommodations will go through a pre-screening at Detroit’s the New Bethel Baptist Church where Aretha’s father used to minister.

Readiness for Socialism

Following 20 years as the now retired sociologist in residence at Marist College. I want to comment briefly here on the current presidential election process in relation to my experience when Obama was running for president in 2008.

For background, I have considered myself to be essentially a "democratic socialist" akin to Bernie Sanders since 1968.

Spiritual Spring Training

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of lent. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York is receiving and distribute ashes at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral today. He calls it "Spiritual Spring Training"

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40 day period of prayer, penance and sacrifice to prepare for the celebration of Easter.

Dolan writes " Lest you think that your Catholic co-workers, neighbors, or passersby on the street forgot to wash their face, let me try to explain Ash Wednesday.

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders scored victories on a wave of voter anger in the New Hampshire presidential nominating contest, stomping career politicians in a display of anti-establishment power.

Trump and Sanders each won in New Hampshire, indicating the high level of voter frustrations. US voters are unhappy with the mainstream and pushing their parties farther apart.

Safety of Media

UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity knows that journalists safety needs a multi-stakeholder approach has identified the news organizations as one of the major stakeholders in the improving safety of journalists.

Thus it aims to raise awareness about the issue of journalists' safety as well as to promote and share industry good practices to improve safety of journalists, to promote dialogue on the issue between media and Member States, and identify gaps for possible follow up.

Corrupt Politicians

With the first primary now complete, it only fitting to say that most politicians have been found to be the most corrupt of all career choices. There could easily be a Top 100 most corrupt politicians list.

Defining political corruption as the use of power for personal gain, this list includes only those public servants who used their office for financial profit.

In New York alone, political toppers have been convicted and others are under investigation.
