NY SACRED SITES

If you're one of those individuals who does not usually frequent houses of worship, here is an idea for you.

Since 1986 The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites program has supported more than 700 religious institutions throughout the state which have received over $8.7 million in matching grants. Sacred Sites is the country’s oldest and largest statewide grant program to help landmark religious properties. Some 200 New York City congregations have received $2.9 million of that grant total.

EDUCATING AMERICA

America’s inner cities need repair and a major overhaul. Some of the problems require a focus on safety, jobs and schools, certainly not race.

Why are we wondering how to stop it? Jobs, education and public safety. Computer hardware, automation, and software can replace people. This is why education is the obvious key, just ask anyone who’s worked in automotive manufacturing or as a travel agent.

Indiana University sexual health researchers have provided a much needed snapshot of contemporary Americans’ sexual behaviors, including a description of more than 40 combinations of sexual acts that people perform during sexual events, patterns of condom use by adolescents and adults, and the percentage of Americans participating in same-sex encounters.

LIGHTS OUT NYC

A member of NY City Council wants to turn off all office skyscrapers lights at night seeking to reduce costs and help migratory birds. Maybe New Yorkers can more easily see the stars in the sky as they walk through its streets.

Energy conservation is what Councilman Donovan Richards Jr. says is common sense. He claims the majority of residents like the idea, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted 969 registered voters, that focuses pollution by light, but some residents fear that less light means an unsafe city and removes NYC trademark.

U.S. commandos have raided eastern Syria, killing a senior Islamic State leader in a firefight and capturing his wife.
According to intelligence officials, this special operation was announced as IS fighters were in central and northeastern Syria.

The militants are nearing the historic city of Palmyra, in the central province of Homs, and have seized a water facility and an oil field on the city's eastern outskirts.

HERNANDO DE SOTO

On a sweltering day in May and almost 500 years ago today, Hernando de Soto and his army of over 600 soldiers splashed ashore in Tampa Bay.

They had been ordered by King Charles V of Spain to sail to La Florida and "conquer, populate and pacify" the land.But this expedition would never yield the gold and treasure these men so desperately sought. Instead, they marched from one village to the next, taking food and enslaving the native peoples to use as guides and porters.
