The notion that we'll avoid serious damage to the world's climate if we limit the warming of the atmosphere to a 2-degree-Celsius rise in temperature is untrue, says Stanford climate scientist Chris Field.

According to Field, director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology at Stanford University.
"There is a lot of misunderstanding about the nature of the vulnerability to climate change. Many people assume that it's concentrated somewhere else, especially in poor parts of the world. In reality, vulnerability has different dimensions in different places.

The following streets in Manhattan will be closed on Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm for DOT Summer Streets:
* Centre Street between Brooklyn Bridge exit and Reade Street/Lafayette Street
* Lafayette Street between Reade Street/Centre Street and Fourth Avenue
* Fourth Avenue between Lafayette Street and 15th Street
* Union Square East between 15th Street and 17th Street
* Park Avenue South between 17th Street and 32nd Street
* Park Avenue between 32nd Street and 72nd Street (Including the viaduct between 40th Street and 46th Street)
* 72nd Street between Park Avenue and 5th Avenue

Broadway Reconstruction Advisory

Reconstruction of roadway, utility upgrades, and replacement of trunk water mains on Broadway between Rector and Ann Streets is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 5th. The work will be conducted in two-block segments at a time.

1st Segment (August 13 - December 13): Rector – Thames (West Side)
2nd Segment (December 13 - July 14): Thames – Liberty (West Side)

The remaining segments are to be determined/scheduled as construction work advances.

Bronx Salsa Festival

Throughout the month of August, the third annual Bronx Salsa Fest will bring performances, classes, concerts, parties and other events celebrating Latin dance to venues across the Bronx. From a sunset bomba performance at Wave Hill in Riverdale on August 17, to the finale performance at Woodlawn Cemetery on August 25, there will be numerous opportunities – many of them free – to experience this vibrant art form.

Signs of the shrinking reporting power are documented throughout this year’s report. Estimates for newspaper newsroom cutbacks in 2012 put the industry down 30% since 2000 and below 40,000 full-time professional employees for the first time since 1978. In local TV, our special content report reveals, sports, weather and traffic now account on average for 40% of the content produced on the newscasts studied while story lengths shrink. On CNN, the cable channel that has branded itself around deep reporting, produced story packages were cut nearly in half from 2007 to 2012.

UN: Journalists Need Protection

Speaking at the UN Security Council's first special session on the protection of journalists, AP Executive Editor and CPJ Vice Chair Kathleen Carroll began by remembering the AP journalists who were killed in the line of duty. But most journalists killed around the world are murdered. "In the overwhelming number of cases, 90 percent, the killers go unpunished," she said, citing CPJ research.

A Tree Grows at St. Paul’s
Please join us for a special walking tour exploring the interesting variety and history of trees on these historic grounds, led by Jessica Schuler, Director of the Thain Family Forest, New York Botanical Garden, on Thursday, August 1, beginning at 7 PM.
