Opening statements are scheduled today from the prosecution and defence in the trial of former foreign minister Ieng Sary, former so-called Brother Number Two Nuon Chea, and former head of State Khieu Samphan on charges including genocide, crimes against humanity and torture.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and four independent United Nations human rights experts today voiced alarm at the violent crackdown on protesters in Egypt, and urged the country’s interim authorities to guarantee the protection of key liberties ahead of next week’s parliamentary elections.

At least 20 people have been killed and more than 1,700 others injured since Saturday in clashes between security forces and demonstrators, according to media reports, with Cairo the focus of the violence.

NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today joined Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Council Transportation Committee Chair James Vacca (Bronx) to announce the start of the city’s first-ever Neighborhood Slow Zone, in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx, reducing the local speed limit from 30 m.p.h. to 20 m.p.h. and adding traffic calming measures to make residential streets even safer and more welcoming for local residents.

NYC officials have just announced that a lone wolf al-Qaida sympathizer, who allegedly plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City was arrested yesterday.

Law enforcement officials say Jose Pimentel wanted to change his name to "Osama Hussein" after Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Officials are making this announcement to apparently justify the spying on private citizens. FBI was not at this news conference.

Officials say they have been monitoring this guy for at least a couple of years.

Many people in this country have worked and saved a portion of their salaries for years, only to see their savings shrivel after a series of investment missteps and interest rate disappointments. Over the past three years alone, the number of US workers over 65 years old has jumped by 16%, while the total number of under 65 year old workers in the national labor force decreased.
