Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has died, according to his foundation. The former UN Chief was 80 years old. Kofi Atta Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.

I had the pleasure of meeting him as the Associated Press NY Bureau Chief when he and his wife hosted members of the workig press at the official UN residence on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He was a bright, kind and gentle soul/
