AMERICA is a continent not a single country. Understand geography.

It is also called the New World, which are the combined continental landmass of the North America and South America continents in the Western Hemisphere. America covers 8.3% of the Earth's total surface area (28.4% of its land area.

Humans first settled America from Asia between 40,000 BCE and 15,000 BCE.

The first European discovery of and settlement in the Americas was by the Norse explorer Leif Ericson. However the colonization never became permanent and was later abandoned.

Weekend Bridge and Street Closures

The Willis Avenue Bridge will be fully closed to motorists and pedestrians on Saturday from 2 am to 6 am for swing span testing. Motorists may use the Madison Avenue Bridge at East 138th Street. Pedestrians and bicyclists may use the Third Avenue Bridge.

One tube of the Queens Midtown Tunnel will be closed from 1 am Saturday through 5 am Monday for necessary repair work. One lane will be open in each direction in the remaining tube. Trucks must use alternate route.

COASTAL DEFENSES

As the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, which swamped New Jersey, New York and other parts of the East Coast on Oct. 29, 2012, is fast approaching, there are some announcements:

U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced $162 million in funding Thursday for 45 storm-protection projects from North Carolina all the way to New England.

The government is providing $15 million for salt marsh restoration along the New Jersey coast. It also allocated $4 million to help storm-proof the federal government's Ohmsett oil spill research and test facility in Middletown.

THE PINK HOUSE

Our friend and press photographer Victor M. Ulloa shared this image when he was at the White House on Thursday.

That's because, for one evening, the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the president's official residence was lit up in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and that thousands will die from the disease.

The Obama administration is supporting breast cancer screenings and other free preventive services which are available under the new health care law.

USA SNOOPING ON FRIENDS?

France, Germany, Mexico, Brazil have objected to the US surveillance program.
28 leaders have considered the facts and are weighing in on the possibility of espionage among friends and allies.

The US calls it outrage theater and respond that this goes on among countries.
The actual scope of National Security Agency snooping abroad has forced President Obama to listen to complaints from allies who are angry about the surveillance net that has sparked an international debate over the limits of American spying.

Fall Leaf Disposal

You can place leaves, grass clippings and small twigs (less than 1/2 inch in diameter) curbside for collection by the NYC.

There is no limit to the amount of clippings that can be put out for collection provided they were produced by residents as household waste. In all boroughs throughout the year they can be placed in the following:

Black or dark brown bags

Unlined trash containers

ONLY 6 WEEKS?

Americans have been given six extra weeks to buy health coverage before facing a government penalty.

Those who buy health insurance through their new online marketplaces now have an extra six weeks to obtain required coverage before they incur a penalty.

This last minute announcement means that those who purchase coverage through the exchange will now have until March 31 to sign up for a specific plan, according to US Department of Health and Human Services.
