BRONX VOLUNTEER

Submitted by ub on

Despite a very active race, Roberto Soto, Executive Editor and Publisher of City Island Images did not lead with the top popular vote count this year. However, he did finish in second place.

The 400 + votes http://cimages.me received are a true testament to the value the City Island Images 24 hour news and information service has had to our online community.

THE LOSS OF DEMOCRACY?

Communities and residents have no real voice in the decision making process. This is the process everywhere in the Bronx.

This is what happened with the golf course in Ferry Point Park; and with the filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park; and with the Kingsbridge Armory ice skating center. It's what's happening now with the plans for shopping malls in Coop City and at the Whitestone Multiplex; and with the proposed soccer stadium near Yankee Stadium; and with the fight to keep Fresh Direct out of an already crowded and overburdened South Bronx; and with the location of waste transfer stations.

This is what happens when one political party has a stranglehold over a community, has no competition, and therefore doesn't have to answer to anyone. This is not democracy.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Mothers Day exists as a result of a daughter's determination. Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother, Mrs Anna M Jarvis and all other mothers of the world. But please, no flowers or presents.

Jarvis dedicated her life to fulfill her mothers dream of the recognition of day for honoring mothers. She was never a mother, but The Mother of all of Mother's Day, is a fitting title to define the remarkable woman's ceaseless devotion to her mother and motherhood in general.

DEULING POLITICAL SCANDALS

There are very few bipartisan issues in Washington, DC, but supporting our military veterans has always been one and rightfully so.

US lawmakers from both sides of the isle are responding in reports that in the state of Arizona, there may be a pattern of mismanagement and negligence providing healthcare to American veterans.

US Congress has issued two Obama administration cabinet members with subpoenas. Secretary of State John Kerry was told to appear before the House Oversight Committee to testify about the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

COMPENSATION EQUALITY

Submitted by ub on

The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. Job content (not job titles) determines whether jobs are substantially equal. All forms of pay are covered by this law, including salary, overtime pay, bonuses, stock options, profit sharing and bonus plans, life insurance, vacation and holiday pay, cleaning or gasoline allowances, hotel accommodations, reimbursement for travel expenses, and benefits. If there is an inequality in wages between men and women, employers may not reduce the wages of either sex to equalize their pay.
