It was 50 years ago today that racial protests, which turned into riots began to break out in New Jersey’s largest city. It all started with fake news that a black cab driver had been killed by the police.
When it was over, dozens were dead, hundreds were injured, and city blocks were razed by fire.

Although I was not living in Newark at the time, our family lived across the river in Kearny but since my mom was employed as a social worker at St. Michael's Hospital, we had to travel there for the duration. I saw a city burning and witnessed hatred and bitterness close up, like my days of yesteryear during a Russian communist-backed revolution.
