The United Nations human rights chief said today that she is “appalled” at the recent escalation of violence in Syria and called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to end the fighting and assist civilians.
As the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva began an urgent debate on Syria, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay reported on a “rapidly deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation” in which civilians continue to bear the brunt of the Government’s crackdown against the popular uprising that began last March.

NYC TAXI PLAN
As the TLC prepares to roll out its five borough taxi plan, Council Member James Vacca will Chair an Oversight hearing on Thursday, March 1 to examine the length of time it takes for-hire vehicles to be inspected at its Woodside Inspection Center, both for new vehicles and renewals. Industry stakeholders have complained that the extensive delays force drivers to forgo weeks' worth of pay or encourages them to drive illegally while they await inspection in order to avoid lost wages.

NEW NYC BID
The NYC Council will be voting on the formation of a new Business Improvement District (BID) in the Westchester Square section of The Bronx. With the Council’s approval, it will become the Bronx’s ninth BID.
28 DAYS IN FEBRUARY?
According to legend, Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) reformed the Egyptian calendar around 45 BC, creating 12 months of 30 or 31 days, resulting in 367 days. Therefore February was reduced by two days to 28, bringing the new year to the current total of 365 days.
