The next two weeks are stacked with top-notch documentaries, from two acclaimed filmmakers, Ibtisam Mara'ana from Israel, and Henry Corra from the US. Both will be visiting The Picture House in person with their latest efforts, respectively 77 Steps and The Disappearance of McKinley Nolan. College students get in for free!

Ryan Gosling gets a week to wreak havoc at The Picture House main hall with his turn as a moody stuntman in the action thriller Driver and the Black Power movement is seen through new eyes in The Black Power Mixtape, 1967-1975.

Happy Birthday to you, there are times you smell like a zoo...

By the late 1800s, New York City's promise and potential were constrained only by a mass transit system that was becoming somewhat frayed around the edges. Electric streetcars, horse-drawn omnibuses and steam-powered elevated trains could carry passengers only limited distances. Manhattan Island north of Greenwich Village was the suburbs and anything much farther out than that was country, certainly impractical for a regular commute.

CICA Meeting

The October Meeting of the City Island Civic Association took place and ended last night without it's President, or VP in attendance at 190 Fordham Street.
Although residents are always welcomed, several regulars were also missing from the monthly meeting.

There were no guests scheduled to speak and little was actually accomplished. Does that mean that in this particular case, no news is still good news?

Perhaps the low attendance had something to do with the October 2010 meeting notice, which as yo can see, makes reference to 2010 and was

Dog Walkers ‘pooper scooper’ Law Enforcement

Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. today announced a public awareness campaign to remind dog walkers to pick up after their dogs, as required by the law.

Bronx HS for the Visual Arts

Tomorrow afternoon @ 4:30 PM, Council Member James Vacca will join Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene, as well as students and faculty from the Bronx High School for the Visual Arts, to cut the ribbon on the school’s recently renovated library and computer lab. Vacca and Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. allocated a combined $340,000 to fund the project, which included new flooring and furniture in the library, upgraded wiring, and new computers for the computer lab.

Dear Commissioner Moran:

Our membership has voted to request speed humps be installed on King Avenue between Ditmars and Fordham Street on City Island (Bronx, New York, 10464).

It is with this in mind we would like to formally request a traffic study be undertaken of this thoroughfare and the findings and determination be reported to the City Island Civic Association upon its completion.
