I love the state of New York in all its size and glory. its rivers and ridgelines, its crowded streets and wide-open skies, its noise and silence, its beauty, and raunchy, stubborn refusal to be anything other than New York.

The USA now operates under something closer to an imperial presidency when it comes to war. Not because the Constitution changed, but because enforcement vanished. This is an institutional failure. Congress has traded its most solemn responsibility, deciding when Americans kill and die, for convenience and cover. And presidents, unsurprisingly, have filled the vacuum.

There was a time when CBS News didn’t need to explain itself. Its values were evident in the reporting, the restraint, the seriousness of purpose. That inheritance has been squandered before in broadcast history, and it can be restored again — but only if leadership remembers that journalism is not performance or positioning. It is responsibility. And responsibility cannot be delegated.
