However, traditional "mom and pop" businesses continue to struggle with demographic and cultural changes, while the rich continue to gain wealth, and the middle class disappears.

Will the Lone Star State evolve into the lonely star if this keeps up? Not so fast, amigo. The Republicans are in power. Despite changing demographics, the Republican Party holds a firm grip on the state, with over 18 million registered voters as of 2024.
There are news reports that thousands have already lost power during the ongoing storm.

How cold is it really? Frosty appears to be on vacation with a Texas politician who traveled to the sunny Southland. This is expected to be a huge and severe winter storm. Dangerously cold air remains in the forecast for more than half of the U.S. population through the weekend and into early next week. The combination of significant snow and ice accumulations and frigid weather could cause power outages and icy roads to linger longer than usual.
Last but never least, the most enjoyable tip of all: grab a blanket, pour something warm, and cuddle up with someone near and dear to you. If they wear fur, even better. If not, a stack of blankets will do just fine. This is the main reason we try to survive winter together.

But the latest forecasts show a potential full collapse of the Polar Vortex, following a Stratospheric Warming event in early February. High-resolution model data shows a breakdown of the polar circulation, forecast to create a prolonged release of cold air across North America and also Europe in February.
233 million Americans are under alerts for snow, sleet, or freezing rain. A large, long-duration winter storm is expected to bring widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies and Plains beginning Friday (Jan. 23), spreading eastward toward New England this weekend. Snow and cold, please go away and don't return another day.

Former special counsel Jack Smith testified publicly for the first time on his investigations into President Trump before the House Judiciary Committee. In this second portion, Smith defended his investigations amid allegations from Republicans that he spied on their phone records and accusations that he was acting politically on behalf of Democrats. Smith also affirmed his findings that Trump knew the 2020 election wasn't fraudulent but made claims anyway that it was in order to stay in power. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to oversee preexisting Justice Department investigations into Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack and alleged mishandling of classified documents. After Trump won the 2024 election, Smith dismissed both cases "without prejudice," meaning charges could be refiled after Trump leaves office. In August 2025, the Trump administration announced an investigation into Smith, alleging his investigations were politically motivated.
