CUBAN AMERICANS
On June 27, 1903, in Paris, the 19-year-old de Acosta flew a motorized dirigible (airship) called No. 9 La Baladeuse, which belonged to the famous Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. This historic achievement took place six months before the Wright brothers' famous heavier-than-air flight at Kitty Hawk in December 1903. This referring to Aida de Acosta, an American socialite of Cuban heritage who became the first woman to solo pilot a powered aircraft.
