FIFA World Cup 2014 kicks off in São Paulo, Brazil this evening with the opening ceremony following by the opening soccer game between Brazil and Croatia.

Until the final games are played on 13 July there will be 32 teams taking part which will play 64 games. These games will bring out the best in athletes and also the worst, especially after getting a call from a referee.

Theatrics have become a large part of these games because the World Cup is the greatest stage for some specialists to show off their athletic and thespian talents.

NY BRIDGE SCOURS: $261 MILLION

New York officials have announced that 54 additional scour-critical bridges have progressed to the next stage for federal action through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. This follows the Governor’s call for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to review the initial round of 51 bridges on May 8, 2014 (view here) and completes New York State’s request for support for the complete 105-bridge program. The total cost of the program will be $518 million.

Virginia's 7th Congressional District experienced a political earthquake, with after shocks, which will surely be felt all across our nation. Brat's loud shouts of excitement and joy were not what Cantor wanted to hear.

US Representative and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va lost to a more conservative challenger Dave Brat. Mr. Brat's margin of victory was more than 10 percentage points, 44 percent for Cantor compared to 55 percent for Brat.

This means The Tea Party is alive and kicking butt. Stories stating that the Tea Party was not relevant anymore are wrong.

MILLIONS FOR ROAD SAFETY PROJECTS

NY State officials are spending millions in road safety improvements. A total of $75.6 million in federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funding includes 33 projects to enhance mobility and safety on roadways across the state.

Projects for this highway safety funding are selected through a competitive process designed to support initiatives that have the greatest ability to reduce traffic fatalities and severe injuries. The following list includes neighborhood projects and our surrounding areas.

Militants continue to take back Iraq, controlling of Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, and getting closer to the Iraqi capital, as soldiers and security forces abandon their posts after clashes with the Al-Qaida insurgents. Some 200 colleges and universities representing 33 States have announced the formation of Higher Ed for Higher Standards, a new coalition that will serve as a vehicle for mobilizing the sector in support of the Common Core Standards.

Members would work with their K-12 partners and state policy makers to ensure full implementation of the Common Core Standards in order to reduce remediation and improve student success throughout the education pipeline, from cradle to career.
