The Best in Human Spirit

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

The Commercial TV, aka BooB Tube was conceived on July 1. It was 70 years ago on July 1, 1941 that the first commercial TV station started broadcasting, turning a novelty into a business. 70 years later, and we have hundreds of channels, featuring news, sports, reality shows and dramas, far beyond what anyone could have imagined in 1941.

The first two stations were here in NYC. WNBT (now known as WNBC) and WCBW (now known as WCBS).

Happy Market Independence Week

American stock markets wrapped up one of their strongest weeks in two years with further gains on Friday, erasing their losses from earlier in June.

An unexpected upturn in manufacturing and easing of concerns about a public-debt default in Greece were the driving forces.

The Dow industrial closed on Friday at 12,582.77, a gain of 1.36 percent for the day and 5.4 percent for the week, in preliminary figures. The broader S&P 500 did much better, gaining 1.44% on Friday and 6% for the week.

NYFD has released the findings of their investigation, which indicates that a candle was responsible for the Bronx fire killing a 12 year old boy and his parents, back in April 24. Fire marshals say that blaze was an accident.

Although the building was in foreclosure and it's ownership is under dispute, the case led NYC officials to crack down on illegally subdivided buildings.
