Shorter Men Live Longer

Submitted by ub on

University of Hawaii researchers set out to determine the relation between height, FOXO3 genotype and age of death in humans. The initial results indicate that being called shorty is not so bad after all.

Height in mid-life is positively associated with mortality, with shorter stature predicting longer lifespan. Height was, moreover, associated with fasting insulin level and the longevity genotype of FOXO3, consistent with a mechanistic role for the IIS pathway.

CITY ISLAND EYESOARS?

We took a pleasant stroll down City Island Avenue and during our walk, we found something that may seem unpleasant to some as they walk, or ride along City Island Avenue.

Eyesores are buildings that are largely considered to look unpleasant or ugly. Common examples include dilapidated buildings, graffiti, litter, and polluted areas. Are you able to identify these?

Some eyesores may be a matter of personal opinions. What say you? Are there any others?

BRONX VOLUNTEER

Despite a very active race, Roberto Soto, Executive Editor and Publisher of City Island Images did not lead with the top popular vote count this year. However, he did finish in second place.

The 400 + votes http://cimages.me received are a true testament to the value the City Island Images 24 hour news and information service has had to our online community.

THE LOSS OF DEMOCRACY?

Communities and residents have no real voice in the decision making process. This is the process everywhere in the Bronx.

This is what happened with the golf course in Ferry Point Park; and with the filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park; and with the Kingsbridge Armory ice skating center. It's what's happening now with the plans for shopping malls in Coop City and at the Whitestone Multiplex; and with the proposed soccer stadium near Yankee Stadium; and with the fight to keep Fresh Direct out of an already crowded and overburdened South Bronx; and with the location of waste transfer stations.

This is what happens when one political party has a stranglehold over a community, has no competition, and therefore doesn't have to answer to anyone. This is not democracy.
