The Bronx Children's Museum celebrated its third annual Dream Big initiative by honoring proud Bronxite and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Afro-Cuban jazz musician Bobby Sanabria, who is also a Bronx native and a Grammy Award Nominee.

Sonia Manzano, of' "Sesame Street" fame served as the master of ceremonies, while politicians and VIP's delivered their speeches inside an uncomfortably hot auditorium.

Divers recover U.S.S. Monitor turret. The rusty iron gun turret of the U.S.S. Monitor broke from the water and into the daylight for the first time in 140 years. The ironclad warship was raised from the floor of the Atlantic, where it had rested since it went down in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, during the Civil War. Divers had been working for six weeks to bring it to the surface.

BACTERIA WATER WARNINGS

New York health officials are warning swimmers to stay out of the waters around West Fordham Street on City Island, as well as Throgs Beach Clubs. These two Bronx beaches may have dangerous level of bacteria and are now closed until further warning.

These two areas are close enough to Orchard Beach to cause concern to the thousands of bathers using the Orchard Beach Public Beach.

NYPD Street Stops

The amount of times NYPD officials have stopped, questioned and frisked citizens on the streets of NYC has recently decreased by 34 percent because police commanders have stopped pushing for such stops.

NYPD conducted over 203 thousand stops in the first three months of this year. During April, May and June, NYPD stopped 133,934 people. The number of overall street stops has increased every year during police commissioner Kelly’s tenure.

The bad news is that crime statistics are now going to increase. City Island Images asks:

UN GA URGES IMMEDIATE HALT TO VIOLENCE IN SYRIA

As the fighting in Syria continues unabated, the General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning the increasing use of heavy weapons by authorities and urging all sides to immediately cease armed violence.

The resolution, presented by the Arab Group, was adopted by a vote of 133 in favor to 12 against with 31 abstentions, and comes two weeks after the Security Council failed to agree on collective action to help stop the bloodshed.

Congressman Serrano voted against H.R. 8, a Republican effort to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Instead, he voted for a Democratic alternative that would have extended tax cuts for 98 percent of all Americans.
