Bismarck sunk by Royal Navy. The British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France. The German death toll was more than 2,000. This 823-foot Bismarck was launched at Hamburg. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler hoped that the state-of-the-art battleship would herald the rebirth of the German surface battle fleet. However, after the outbreak of war, Britain closely guarded ocean routes from Germany to the Atlantic Ocean, and only U-boats moved freely through the war zone.

It has not been 76 glorious years since the sands of Orchard Beach established the "Riviera of NYC" for thousands of New Yorkers and international visitors to enjoy during the warm summer months.

On this Memorial Day, City Island Images wishes to send out a salute and to pay tribute to all US veterans and their family members, for all those sacrifices they have had to endure over the years.

This weekend, many are opening up their pools, going to the beach, or cooking on their grills. But Memorial Day is a lot more than just a three-day weekend. Memorial Day is a solemn time to remember those who have sacrificed their own lives for the rest of US.

In the 1940s and 50s Rodríguez reorganized the son conjunto and developed the son montuno, the basic template of modern-day salsa. There is an effort underway to honor this “Father of Salsa Music" by having the corner of Intervale and Dawson named after him Bronx.
