Tomorrow, NYC Council Member James Vacca and Council Member Michael Nelson will co-chair a joint hearing of the Committees on Transportation and Waterfronts to examine the progress of NYCEDC’s East River Ferry Pilot, which has been in operation since last June.

Ensuring the success of the ferry pilot is critical to potential expansion of the ferry service to waterfront neighborhoods in all five boroughs. EDC’s 2010 Comprehensive Citywide Ferry Study showed that many waterfront neighborhoods are transit starved and experience some of the worst commute times in the city.

Top United Nations officials say that Syria is at a “pivotal” moment following the Security Council’s authorization this weekend of a supervision mission, and called for a full cessation of armed violence in the country.

“It is our hope that the deployment of observers will help to stop the killing and consolidate the calm,” said the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, B. Lynn Pascoe. “The objective, however, is clearly not to freeze the situation but to create the conditions for a serious and credible political process.”
