President Obama had an hour of free TV prime time to debut his first campaign commercial of 2012.

Obama said "What's at stake are not Democratic values or Republican values, but American values. We have to reclaim them." We say what is he waiting for?

An unusual Oscar season finds the following niminations, as “The Artist,” a mostly silent tribute to old Hollywood, and “Hugo,” another bit of film nostalgia, joins “The Descendants,” about life and love in Hawaii, and “Midnight in Paris,” about literary Paris, in scoring an array of major nominations, including those for best picture and best director.

WANTED: 600 MILLION GLOBAL JOBS

The world needs to create 600 million new jobs over the next decade to sustain economic growth and maintain social stability, the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) said in its annual report on global employment unveiled today.

According to the report entitled ‘Global Employment Trends 2012: Preventing a deeper jobs crisis,’ the world faces the additional challenge of creating decent jobs for the estimated 900 million workers who subsist on less than $2 a day, most of them in developing countries.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT OUR SCHOOLS

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. today joined school leaders at Our Saviour Lutheran School in Morris Park to kickoff the 2nd annual Christian Leadership Scholarship program.

Initiated last year, the Christian Leadership Scholarship awards full tuition for all four years of high school at Our Saviour Lutheran School to an incoming ninth grade student who exhibits principles of community leadership.

Borough President Diaz and school leaders at Our Saviour Lutheran School encourage 8th graders from all over the Bronx to apply for this year’s scholarship.

Lower Middle Class for US

Middle class neighborhoods appear to be shrinking over the past few decades, according to many old timers City Island Images have spoken with. Most feel that the rich poor divide continues to deepen across the country.

The problem appears to be that the rich and the poor are increasingly isolated from one another in many of our larger metropolitan cities, like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Even worse, these cities appear to have the greatest percentages of segregation, according to statistics.

AP WILL HAVE A THIRD PRESIDENT IN 10 YEARS

However to state that AP has had three presidents in 1o years is a bit distorted.

First there was President Lou Boccardi, a gentleman of integrity, who served 18 1/2 years as President of the world's oldest news-gathering organization. Currently serving is Mr. Tom Curley, who came to AP from Gannett's USA TODAY has just announced that he is stepping down after 9 years at the helm. Most of the folks City Island Images spoke with were not very surprised.

So, even if we include the new President, whenever he, or she is finally chosen that will make it 3 Presidents in 27-plus years.

HAPPY NEW YEAR OF THE DRAGON 4710

From Bangkok to Beijing from Singapore to Seoul, billions of Asians are hoping for good luck in this new year that begins Monday. The masses visit temples to pray and light incense, many also set off firecrackers and enjoy street festivals and joyous performances of Dragon dances.

The Dragon is considered special, although it is the only animal in the Chinese calendar, which does not really exist. According to statistics, more women get pregnant during the year of the Dragon, which only occurs every 12 years.
