A MESSAGE FROM NY STATE SENATOR KLEIN

Bullying is no longer confined to the playground. It now can be piped into their homes via the Internet, onto the phones they carry in their pockets and magnified a thousand fold by social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

This constant harassment is called cyberbullying. The National Crime Prevention Council reports that 43 % of all teens in the U.S. have been subjected to it.

And, sadly, it has proven to be deadly.

Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more designed by artist Michael Natiello await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children Adventure Garden. Youngsters play inside a "gourd-geous" Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, have a "hoot" finding out what owls eat by dissecting pellets, and look for wiggly worms under a rotting log. Kids of all ages are encouraged to wear scary costumes for daily parades through the Adventure Garden. Get your tickets.

LANDMARK The great old movie houses of the past have largely been carved up, torn down, or turned into something completely different. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of one of few surviving – and still operating – single-screen theaters, we work to ensure that the 90-year-old Pelham Picture House will continue to entertain audiences for generations to come. Yesterday, before going to teach one of my college classes, I decided to stop by and visit the oldest, coolest, most wonderful, and one of the wisest people I know. He is 95 year old Captain Ed Sadler, a retired fire-boat Captain.

Ed and I have shared many delightful visits and he has even come to my home for dinner and drinks. We have had many conversations over time, and yesterday was no exception. Ed recalled the days when my TOCAYO, Robert Moses was building our area and the many changes which occurred as a result.
