Asian megatropolis

This metropolis is definitely a mega city. They call it Shanghai and it is like The Big Apple on steroids.

Depending on who you listen to Shanghai is said to have a population of more than 23 million, but our crazy cowboy cab driver, aka speed demon insisted it has 27 million people. In either case, this is by far the largest and the most developed metropolis in The Peoples Republic of China, PRC. With nearly 3 thousand square miles, Shanghai physically, literally, and figuratively rocks in every way shape, or form.

Hispanic political siesta?

With the midterm elections less than a month away, Democrats are burdened by Barack Obama’s political standing which is in some respects weaker than it was at a comparable point during the 2010 campaign, which caused the GOP to gain a majority in the US House of Representatives.

We are all too familiar with the term sleeping giant. The Latino vote was a good example, when it seemed to have awakened during the 2008 campaign and some say it remained through 2012. However the Hispanic vote appears to be returning to a form of slumber party, or a "Fiesta de Siesta."

California's serious water conservation

Los Angeles residents are being told to decrease water consumption by 20 percent over the next 3 years. This is a serious warning and the official response to a dangerous drought.

LA Mayor ordered departments to dramatically cut the amount of water used by replacing lawns and other city landscaping, including street medians, with less thirty plants.

Angelinos were told that they cannot longer afford the water policies of the past. They are now being told to conserve, recycle and rethink how water is consumed to make sure that we have enough water to keep L.A. growing.

Register to avoid political disaster

Submitted by ub on

Federal, state and local public servants have joined political inaction committees, which are wasting our tax dollars and courting political disaster.

Voter registration is the responsibility of all the citizens of The United State of America, but only 70 percent of those who are eligible to vote have been registered.

RegistertoVote.org is committed to reaching the remaining 30 percent. They simplify the voter registration process, making it faster and easier for US citizens to get involved and become an active voice in the democratic system..

The place to find beautiful people

They call it the city of angels, but the official name is Los Angeles, aka LA-LA Land and in nearby Hollywood, they have all the beautiful people who are lucky enough to walk down the red carpet, and there are those who are just content to get up close and personal.

To feel like you’re one of these people, spend an afternoon on West Hollywood’s Robertson Avenue, or down ridiculously overpriced Rodeo drive where upscale department stores offer excellent chances to rub shoulders with celebrities.

Columbus reaches the New World. After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sights a Bahamian island, believing he has reached East Asia. His expedition went ashore the same day and claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain, who sponsored his attempt to find a western ocean route to China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. Little is known of his early life, but he worked as a seaman and then a maritime entrepreneur. He became obsessed with the possibility of pioneering a western sea route to Cathay (China), India, and the gold and spice islands of Asia. At the time, Europeans knew no direct sea route to southern Asia, and the route via Egypt and the Red Sea was closed to Europeans by the Ottoman Empire, as were many land routes. Contrary to popular legend, educated Europeans of Columbus' day did believe that the world was round, as argued by St. Isidore in the seventh century. However, Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world's size, calculating that East Asia must lie approximately where North America sits on the globe (they did not yet know that the Pacific Ocean existed).

White House cornerstone laid. The cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. In 1800, President John Adams became the first president to reside in the executive mansion, which soon became known as the "White House" because its white-gray Virginia freestone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings. The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation's capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. French architect Charles L'Enfant designed the area's radical layout, full of dozens of circles, crisscross avenues, and plentiful parks. In 1792, work began on the neoclassical White House building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue under the guidance of Irish American architect James Hoban, whose design was influenced by Leinster House in Dublin and by a building sketch in James Gibbs' Book of Architecture. President George Washington chose the site.

There are several versions on who discovered America first. Some point to Chinese explorers, others say it was the Vikings. But what is crystal clear is that there must have been a series of immigration waves to the Western Hemisphere.

The world is facing an Ebola epidemic and the people of the US are searching for answers from their Surgeon General.

Where is he and what is his name? Next moth is the one year anniversary of President Obama appointing Dr. Vivek Murthy as US Surgeon General. He had his Senate a confirmation hearing in February, but what has happened since then? Nothing, nada darn thing, folks. It's a damn shame.
