This Week in History, Sep 14 - Sep 20

Sep 14, 1901
McKinley dies of infection from gunshot wounds. On this day in 1901, U.S. President William McKinley dies after being shot by a deranged anarchist during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley won his first Congressional seat at the age of 34 and spent 14 years in the House, becoming known as the leading Republican expert on tariffs. After losing his seat in 1890, McKinley served two terms as governor of Ohio. By 1896, he had emerged as the leading Republican candidate for president, aided by the support of the wealthy Ohio industrialist Mark Hanna. That fall, McKinley defeated his Democratic rival, William Jennings Bryan, by the largest popular margin since the Civil War.

The City Island Nautical Museum presents The Rosenfeld Collection. This is the largest single collection of maritime photography in the world, and although it is housed at Mystic Seaport, the photographers who created it lived and worked on City Island in The Bronx.

Morris Rosenfeld and his sons helped define maritime art photography. Their images of sailboats, steam yachts, naval vessels, powerboat races, leisure activities, and every America’s Cup Race from 1885 to 1992 are world famous.

This exhibition will feature images of the most beautiful boats created or worked on at the island’s yacht yards, including Dorade, Brilliant, Bolero, and several successful defenders of the America’s Cup. In addition to sailing images, there will be photographs of boat construction and launchings, many of them original prints in the Nautical Museum’s collection, and a unique slide show created by curator Thomas Nye.

As a special feature of the Rosenfeld exhibition on view at the Nautical Museum, curator Tom Nye created this presentation celebrating City Island.

I AM A NEW YORKER

I am a New Yorker
I do not live in the five boroughs or on the Island or Upstate
I may live hundreds or thousands of miles away
Or I may live just over the GW Bridge
But I am a New Yorker nonetheless

I am a New Yorker
Whatever took me out of New York:
Business, family or hating the cold
did not take New York out of me.
My accent may have faded and my pace may have slowed
But I am a New Yorker

I am a New Yorker
I was raised on Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rockefeller
Plaza,
The Yankees or the Mets
Orchard, Jones or Rye Beach or other beaches on the sound

BLADE RUNNER MAY WALK

A South African judge rules that Oscar Pistorius is guilty of culpable homicide, after freeing him from the more serious charge of premeditated murder.

Pistorius is the infamous double-amputee some rooted for in the London 2012 Olympics, who shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door.

The prosecution said he killed her on purpose, while the defense said it was a mistake because Oscar thought she was an intruder.’

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As we approach another Summer's end, it is time once again to consider a new harvest and take note of all our blessings. Please keep in mind that every well-intentioned group’s solution to any issue must be considered with a precise balance. The absence of a critical attitude always has consequences. Any and all decisions require serious consideration.

The following are some suggestions for a balanced behavior:

LESS ALCOHOL, MORE TEA

LESS MEAT, MORE VEGETABLES

LESS SALT, MORE VINEGAR

LESS SUGAR, MORE FRUITS

LESS EATING, MORE CHEWING

LESS WORDS, MORE ACTIONS

City Island Senior Center At War?

Submitted by ub on

There are problems at the City Island Senior Center, which operates Monday - Friday from 9 am - 3 pm at Grace Episcopal Church.

I don't know if it was the tension of 9/11, the choppy waters surrounding City Island, or perhaps that super-moon, which tends to bring out plenty of wacky actions, but as City Island Images drove past the City Island Senior Center, there was loud yelling and we dare say some members blood pressures were probably trending on the high end.

To say that 9-11-01 changed the lives of nearly every American who experienced it whether you were here in NYC and lived it, or watched this terrorist act on TV is certainly a huge understatement.

NFL FUMBLES

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell may have not only dropped the ball, but there may also be a red flag in the case of running back Ray Rice, who was seen in a video punching his then girlfriend.

His unacceptable defensive move has been that he had not seen the offensive video clips, which TMZ and The AP have reported on. As a result, Rice is out of a job for the tie being and an increasing number of critics think National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell should be next. NFL = Not Female Love?

SUPERMOON

NASA says sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a Super-moon and a regular full moon, as clouds and haze can mask a difference in brightness.

Astronomers used to call them new moons or Perigean full moons, new or full moons closely coinciding with perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth in its orbit.
