DEMOCRATS DEBATE

Submitted by Admin on

Democratic presidential candidates take the debate stage in Las Vegas under the time-honored rules of presidential debating, alone, unaided, defending their candidacies with only their wits and smiles.

While it will not really be a real debate in every sense of the word, because the word describes a clash of ideas and positions, it will be a media competition to see how accurately each candidate outlines his or her talking points, and other than some excursion into originality catch them in a flip-flop or a gaffe.

ELECTION = DEMOCRACY?

If elected officials refuse to be accountable for all their actions, then democracy seizes to exist and the entire system collapses and dies.

If democracy breaks down, elected representative can easily transform him, or herself into a despot. History has examples of democratically elected leaders who evolved into tyrants. Here are three instances in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Ferdinand Marcos - He was first elected as an idolized figure of the resistance against the Japanese in WWII. When he was ousted in 1986, his government was synonymous with corruption and repression.

MORE DEBATES FOR US

Submitted by Admin on

An informed electorate lies at the heart of our democracy. So why is the Democratic National Committee limiting debates between the 2016 Democratic presidential candidates? What are they trying to hide, or who do they want to protect?

The Democratic party has announced six debates, and has gone even further, introducing an exclusivity clause which disqualifies from the debates any candidate that participates in additional, unsanctioned candidate forums. In 2008, the Democratic candidates debated 26 times during the political primaries.

Although some will move from shutdown villains to Congressional royalty, there is more than control of Congress at stake when US voters go to the polls today. Americans will vote in 36 gubernatorial races, they will elect thousands of state officials and have their say in about 140 statewide referendums. Voters who sit out some elections, but vote today could be playing a vital role by helping to keep our democracy on track.
