Leonard Gold, Captain, USAAC - Retired US Air Corps Decorated Fighter Pilot passed away today, following a long and distinguished career. His granddaughter Diana told me he died in peace, after an active 95 years.

City Images had the distinct honor of interviewing and getting to know this gentle warrior. He also took time to speak to students at a couple of my college classes and these young people were as impressed with him as I was. Lenny even took time to attend my City Island wedding and reception. Since we met, we enjoyed each others company socially, until the very end.

AGING GRACEFULLY

If you're taking steps to ensure that you stay in good health and are able to enjoy your later years. then good for you. Eating, exercising, regular checkups from a doctor are all necessary. But it also makes sense to have some contingency plans for the bumps along the road which most certainly will come along.

Adapt your home. Your stairs, bath, and kitchen can present hazards for some people. Even if you don't need to make changes now, do an annual safety review so you can make necessary updates if those needs arise.

TAKING WAY TOO LONG

It has now been three weeks since prisoners escaped from NY State penitentiary. Officials estimate there have been more than 1,000 members of law enforcement involved in the massive manhunt for the convicted murderers who escaped from a New York State prison three weeks ago.

At an estimated $1 million dollars a day, that is a lot of money, folks. NY state police is leading in the search, but other law enforcement agencies are involved in the effort, which includes US Marshals Service, FBI, the New York Department of Correction and local law enforcement.

Same sex marriage is now the law of the land and the right of all Americans. Supreme Court says same-sex couples have right to marry in all 50 states, according to Justice Kennedy, who wrote the opinions.

Same-sex unions had been recorded in the history of a number of cultures, but marriages or socially-accepted unions between same-sex partners were rare or nonexistent in other cultures. In the late 20th century, religious rites of marriage without legal recognition became increasingly common in certain sects.

SCREAM FOR SUNSCREEN

Less than half of the people surveyed understood the definition of sun factor protection (SPF) and only seven percent knew what to look for on a label if they wanted a sunscreen that offers protection against early skin aging.

"We need to do a better job of educating people about sun protection and make it easier for them to understand labels," said Dr. Roopal Kundu, lead author of the study.

Kundu is an associate professor in dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a dermatologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The US Coast Guard has launched Operation Dry Water as part of a nationally coordinated effort to reduce the number of accidents and deaths related to boating under the influence.

Operation Dry Water is a year-long campaign with heightened enforcement leading up to the Fourth of July, a period known for increased boating and alcohol use.

Coast Guard boarding officers will be on the water educating boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence and detecting boaters who are impaired.
