Extreme heat (record 102°F, heat index up to 113°F) and then thunderstorms hit Washington over the July 4th weekend. The heat forced D.C. to cancel its annual parade and temporarily shut down the "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall — dozens of people needed medical treatment, several were hospitalized. Then, just as the "Salute to America" event was getting underway Saturday evening, a thunderstorm rolled in and the Secret Service ordered an evacuation, sending thousands of attendees to shelter in nearby Smithsonian buildings and Metro stations for a couple of hours.

Trump’s Republicans may find a path out their political valley. But it is difficult to escape the shadows when the country is bathed in sunlight. A hopeful president, could have carried through a jubilant summer by parades, celebrations, and boost national optimism, changing the political weather winds. In seasons like these, hope has a momentum of its own, and those betting on discontent find themselves rowing against the tide.
Will we see a dark summer of chaos and violence, of power grabs and preparing for an authoritarian fall season? Each and every citizen must defend our government, strengthen democratic institutions and expand political participation with vigilance against movements at home to weaken constitutional limits on power.
