US NEEDS CIVILITY

After attending a local civic meeting, then watching Obama's State of the Union, this entire experience was disappointing. From the president's speech to a local civic association meeting, so many leaders would be better off by thinking twice before they open their mouths.

Political speeches, as well as town meetings have always been part of our democracy. They are regularly used to set rules, to show support for certain issues and to discuss many other ideas. Their general purpose is for residents to regularly gather, discuss and act on matters for the good of the entire community.

The City Island Civic Association wants all City Islanders to know that the next meeting of their will take place on January 28th 2014 at 190 Fordham Street. This will be our first meeting of the year. 2014 dues are $20.00 cash or check.

RIP PETE SEEGER

He was an environmental activist, a folk singer and an American troubadour. Pete Seeger is dead at 94. He was always buoyed by his characteristically soaring spirit. Pete Seeger played on City Island and even took part in Occupy Movement protests.

The banjo-picking and guitar strumming troubadour who sang for college students, migrant workers, and star-struck politicians introduced generations to American folk music heritage.

The following are a wide sample of his appearances, but on this anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti, here is Pete Seeger singing about the great Cuban poet.

Turns out that the new restaurant that is scheduled to open up on City Island is a partnership between Paul, the Albanian owner of The Lighthouse and Jimmy, the Puerto Rican former owner of Jimmy's Cafe and current owner of two other Don Coqui restaurants.

City Island Images visited with these individuals today and they told cimages.me that they've also teamed up with the former owner of Lido Restaurant. However, they say that unfortunate operational issues have now delayed their grand opening.

This larger-than-life bronze equestrian statue depicting Cuban icon, patriot, journalist and author José Martí (1853–1895) is found in NYC's Central Park and stands at the head of The Big Apple's Avenue of the Americas.

Martí was also a well know poet who fought for Cuba's liberation, also known as of the pearl of the Antilles, from Spanish rule.

STATE OF THE UNION

With Obama's ratings close to an all-time low, the president should try to make this State of the Union speech a total game-changer, but he's probably going to be low-key.

Is it a solid and unified state or more like the state of disunion? There is little President Barack Obama can do to help the Democrats this year. He appears to be less popular and his value on the campaign trail has been severely limited, especially in the places that matter most for Democrats.
