Amidst reports of heavy fighting, United Nations observers in Syria are concerned over the escalation of violence in the city of Homs, a Syrian opposition stronghold.

“UN observers reported heavy fighting in Rastan and Talbiseh, north of the city, with artillery and mortar shelling, as well as firing from helicopters, machine guns and smaller arms,” the spokesperson for the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), Sausan Ghosheh, said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined thousands of others to celebrate Boricua pride at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Borough President Diaz paraded up 5th Avenue to the tune of “Bomba y Plena,” thanks to the musical group Los Pleneros de la 21, who marched with Diaz and dozens of staffers and supporters.

Raceway begins a nine week long "Sunday Summer Concerts" on July 1, 2012.

CLARE WEISS EMERGING ARTIST AWARD

The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s Art in the Parks program announced that Katherine Daniels is the 2012 recipient of the Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award. Ornamental Paths, a site-specific weaving installation inspired by the signature Art Deco residential buildings that line the Grand Concourse, will border the central and northern pathways in Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx. This vibrant take on the Bronx’s historical architecture will be on view through June 2013. The $7,000 award is granted annually in memory of Clare Weiss, Parks’ Curator of Public Art from 2005 to 2009.
