Visit NYBG to see the early burst of color in the award-winning, sustainable Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden. The mild weather has prompted roses to bloom about a month earlier than in previous years. Peak bloom is expected just in time for Mother’s Day Weekend. A full complement of rose-themed public education programs kicks off this weekend, including daily tours, a special full-day lecture series, Home Gardening Demonstrations, and Adult Education classes, all providing opportunities to appreciate and learn more about the rose, an iconic flower whose beauty continues to fascinate.

CLEAN-UP TIME

It's Lagoon Clean-up time once again. Friends of Pelham Bay Park have organized this event in conjunction with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) takes places this Saturday, May 11th.

Landlubbers will meet at the Bartow-Pell Mansion located at 895 Shore Road at 9:30 am to remove shoreline debris.

Rowers will meet at 9:00 am at the Orchard Beach kayak launch by the northwest (far left) side of the parking lot to haul debris across the water. Rangers will be on hand to teach basic skills. Launch time is 9:30 am.

This one of a kind photographer and journalist, was best known for his amazing, searing and sometimes startling images from the war in Vietnam. Fass carved out new standards for covering war with a camera, proving that
a picture is indeed worth one thousand words.

He served as chief of AP photo operations in Saigon for a decade beginning in 1962, Horst Faas didn't just cover the news but he also recruited and trained new talent from among foreign and Vietnamese freelancers.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United Nations Security Council have strongly condemned deadly bomb attacks in Damascus today, and called for an end to the ongoing violence in the Middle Eastern country.

“The Secretary-General reiterates his urgent call on all sides fully to comply with their obligations to cease armed violence in all its forms, and to protect civilians, as well as to distance themselves from indiscriminate bombings and other terrorist acts,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in information provided to the media.

They are very special because they're much older older and wiser than most. Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. today hosted The Bronx annual Centenarian Celebration as a part of Bronx Week 2012.

This event celebrates the lives of senior Bronxites who have lived to see an entire century. Borough President Diaz presented citations to the borough’s wisest for holding the secrets to a long life.
