Commemoration of Veterans Day - Friday, November 11, 2011

The site is open 9 AM to 5 PM.

There will be periodic tours throughout the day -- depending on visitors interest and staff availability -- telling the stories of soldiers buried in the historic cemetery, with an emphasis on Civil War veterans, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the conflict.

NO STRESS - ONLY A TEST

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will take over television and radio waves on Wednesday morning (Nov. 9) as part of the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System.

The new EAS allows the president to address the nation during extreme emergencies, FEMA officials said. The test is to help "determine the reliability of the system and its effectiveness in notifying the public of emergencies and potential dangers nationally and regionally," FEMA officials said on the agency's website.

LOOK FOR THE BLIMP

Weather permitting, the U.S. Navy and the FAA will conduct capabilities flights using a U.S. Navy MZ-3A Airship (a blimp) in and around NYC on 11/09/11, from 9:00 AM-4:30 PM.

The flights will be based out of Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, and will operate at altitudes of 1,000 feet and below. Please find a photo of this aircraft attached.

INBOUND ASTEROID

A 1,300-foot wide asteroid will miss Earth, according to most astronomers. But countless asteroids, gravity wells and other celestial bodies that shaped its course through the cold reaches of space could have turned this near miss into a total disaster.

This space rock has traveled many light years to reach us, on a trajectory affected by planets, asteroids, space dust and more. It will soon be a mere 201,700 miles from Earth, which is actually closer than the moon.

The Woodstock generation lent it's support to Occupy Wall Street by performing for the crowd. David Crosby & Graham Nash played and sang at Zuccotti Park today.

Longtime music legends and activists Crosby and Nash were scheduled performed a concert at the Occupy Wall Street protest site in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park

Crosby, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer of The Byrds, as well as Crosby Stills and Nash fame, visited the park last week. On Tuesday afternoon an acoustic concert was performed, including a series of well known protest songs.

GUILTY

A Los Angeles County Superior Court Jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who was accused of involuntary manslaughter in the June 25, 2009 death of pop star Michael Jackson.

Dr. Murray faces up to four years in prison and loss of his medical license.

The judge has discretion to decide the sentence. He will receive recommendations from a probation department report and both attorneys.

NYC Schools and Library Partnership

The pilot program, called Biblio Schools, comes as the city has cut assistance for teachers to buy supplies will serve schools in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx.

This partnership between the New York Public Library and the NYC Public Schools will allow teachers to borrow books online and have them delivered directly to classrooms. The NYPL hopes to find funding to expand the program within two years.

US WEALTH DIFFERS AMONG AGE GROUPS

There is a record breaking difference between the young and the old in terms of financial status.

US households headed by someone under age 35 had their median net worth decreased by 27% in 2009 as a result of liabilities, mostly a combination of credit card debt and student loans. No other age group had anywhere near that level of unsecured liability acting as a drag on net worth; the next closest was the 35-44 age group, at 10 percent.
