Staying Cool in a Heatwave

It’s possible to keep your home cool without air conditioning practicing environmentally friendly principals to help keep everyone comfortable and save some money.

The most important thing one can do to keep a home cool without air conditioning is to keep as much sunlight out as possible and let cooler air in at night. During the day, keep windows, drapes, blinds, or shades closed, especially on the southern and western sections of your home. If you have a porch, you can put up large plastic or bamboo shades to cut down on sunlight.

With the national heat dome moving our way, our public beaches may be closed in a day. So fat, the Hudson and East, and Harlem Rivers are off-limits to sports canoeing, kayaking, and swimming through this weekend.

The culprit is an explosion at a water-treatment plant in Manhattan, which forced the city to pump raw sewage into the river. A fire ripped through the engine room of the North River Waste water Treatment Plant on West 135th Street.

The Paley Center for Media presents the first comprehensive retrospective of Judy Garland’s career on television, celebrating some of the incomparable entertainer’s most notable, as well as most rarely seen, appearances in the medium. This series is coordinated and produced in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center who will be screening Garland’s motion picture work July 26 to August 9, 2011.

NYC PARKS CAMPING

Free overnight camping in NYC parks is allowed - but only on select nights, and only if you win the lottery.

The lottery in question is operated by the Urban Park Rangers and it allows families to bring a tent and other useful urban camping gear to spend a night in Central Park, Fort Greene Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, Marine Park, Alley Pond Park or Wolfe’s Pond Park.

A 24-hour online lottery is held for each camping night with about 30 winning entries per event. The NYC camping and lottery dates for 2011:
