Civil war erupts in Rwanda. On this day in 1994, Rwandan armed forces kill 10 Belgian peacekeeping officers in a successful effort to discourage international intervention in the genocide that had begun only hours earlier. In approximately three months, the Hutu extremists who controlled Rwanda brutally murdered an estimated 500,000 to 1 million innocent civilian Tutsis and moderate Hutus in the worst episode of ethnic genocide since World War II.

Aaron sets new home run record. On this day in 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth's legendary record of 714 homers. A crowd of 53,775 people, the largest in the history of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, was with Aaron that night to cheer when he hit a 4th inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers' Al Downing. However, as Aaron was an African American who had received death threats and racist hate mail during his pursuit of one of baseball's most distinguished records, the achievement was bittersweet.
This weekend, Focal Point Gallery in association with NYC's Idea Factory launched an extraordinary month long exhibition of young Bronx area artists ages 2-17 years old.
The installation debut a special and unique exhibition of Bronx young people's artwork 17 and younger. Celebrating thirty-nine years of exhibitions and perseverance, City Island's Focal Point Gallery was founded in 1974 by City Island photographer Ron Terner. The Gallery serves as City Island's official exhibition space for multidimensional and exceptional little-known artists.
Hundreds turned out to Fordham University, which was the place to be today. It was the first ever Bronx Health & Wellness Summit. The Bronx Borough President's Office put together a full agenda that offered something for everyone.
At the summit, you could learn how your health coverage will change with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, how to effectively continue medical care for your children, how mental health issues are handled to ensure public safety, or which classes college students can take to pursue a career in healthcare, the borough's number one employer.
