Bronx Asthma Initiative

The Bronx has the highest incident of asthma in the entire US. Rates of death from asthma in Bronx county are three times higher than they are nationally. Hospitalization rates are about five times higher. In some neighborhoods of the Bronx it is estimated that 20% of the children have asthma.3 Within New York City the disparity in asthma hospitalization rates is very pronounced. According to a study, hospitalization rates for asthma in Bronx County and East Harlem are 21 times higher than those of affluent parts of the city.

ANOTHER PASTOR LEAVING CITY ISLAND

For the second month in a row, another religious pastor has announced her departure from City Island. This time it's Mother Patty from Grace Episcopal Church at 104 City Island Avenue. Mother Patty tells City Island Images that her last service will be on July 31 and she will then go on vacation.

Mother Patty has accepted an offer at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, which is located at 8804 Postoak Road Potomac, MD 20854-3553 (301) 983-5200. She will serve as the new pastor at the K-12 religious school, as well as teach academic courses.

The American women's soccer team is no longer feeling groovy tonight. Japan won the World Cup for Women, stunning the United States 3-1 during a penalty shootout after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie.

Mosquito Spraying This Week

A notification has been issued that the Department of Health will be conducting aerial larviciding for mosquitoes to help prevent West Nile Virus in marsh and non-residential areas between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM from 7/18 - 7/20. Larviciding will occur in the following Bronx zip code: 10464 Expect a low-flying helicopter in our area.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

The Bronx DA's office announced the sentencing of a drunk truck driver who pinned a young City Island girl back on November 13, 2010. She was standing on the sidewalk on City Island avenue, when Peter Wolfman allegedly lost control of his truck while making an illegal U-turn.

17 year old Emily Sexton, a City Island resident was waiting for a bus, when she became the victim of an alcohol and drug intoxicated truck driver, who has since been sentenced to prison for vehicular assault.

SALSA MEETS JAZZ WITH DAVE VALENTIN ON ORCHARD BEACH

Bronx Lebanon Hospital, in association with The Bronx Tourism Council, The Borough President and The National Jazz Museum today presented a free concert on Orchard Beach. The live music included Grammy Award winner Dave Valentin. The native New Yorker and Latin Jazz flute maestro lives here in the Bronx and studied at Bronx Community College.

Valentin has recorded over 15 albums, combining the influence of Rhythm and Blues, Pop Music, Brazilian music with Salsa, Latin and Smooth Jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover sound.
