The National Weather Service has posted a winter weather advisory for NYC until midnight.

The winds and snow are expected this afternoon, with accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. Windy conditions near northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Chance of snow 90 percent.

Tonight: Cloudy. Snow likely...mainly in the evening. Total snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches. Breezy with lows in the mid 30s. North winds 15 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 35 mph...decreasing to 25 mph after midnight. Chance of snow 70 percent.

Members of the sleepy nautical community of City Island are beginning to come out of hibernation.

They attended two events held today. The grand opening of the City Island Nautical Museum and the annual celebrations of Women's Herstory Month.

Both events were held at 190 Fordham street. The City Island Community Center hosted the women's celebration, which was a popular destination and jammed packed with women of all ages. There were vendors, health care workshops, artistic and musical performances, including serious discussions.

Exxon Valdez runs aground. The worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez, owned and operated by the Exxon Corporation, runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in southern Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water. Attempts to contain the massive spill were unsuccessful, and wind and currents spread the oil more than 100 miles from its source, eventually polluting more than 700 miles of coastline. Hundreds of thousands of birds and animals were adversely affected by the environmental disaster.

Lottery officials say one single ticket sold in the state of New Jersey has apparently matched all six numbers in last night's drawing for the $338.3 million Power-ball jackpot. This was the lucky 13th drawing held since a Virginia man won a $217 million jackpot Feb. 6.

Thirteen other lotto tickets worth $1 million each matched all but the final Power-ball number last night. Those tickets were sold in New Jersey and 10 other states. Lottery officials said there was also one Power Play Match 5 winner in Iowa.

An estimated 7,000 cities in over 150 countries were expected to turn off the lights for an hour this Saturday night to celebrate Earth Hour 2013. It's like a voluntary global blackout. From London to NYC.

Some of the world's most famous landmarks, including NYC's Empire State Building, London's Big Ben, and many others went dark from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. eastern time to commemorate the seventh annual Earth Hour, which started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million people turned off all non-essential lighting.
