GLOBAL ECONOMIC OUTLOOK IMPROVING

The prospects for the global economy are slowly improving, but growth is expected to be weak, especially in Europe, according to a United Nations-backed report released today.

The 2012 World Economic Outlook, published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), added that unemployment in many advanced economies will stay high.

“Although action by policymakers in Europe and elsewhere has helped to reduce vulnerabilities, risks of a renewed upsurge of the crisis in Europe continue to loom large, along with geopolitical uncertainties affecting the oil market,” stated the Fund.

The New York Botanical Garden is launching NYBG IN BLOOM, a free, customized iPhone application that will add an interactive aspect to the visitor experience. The application is a fun and engaging tool that will enable visitors through their own mobile, Internet-ready iPhone and iPod Touch devices to explore and discover nature during their time at the Botanical Garden. The app, which allows users to customize their visits to America’s premier urban garden, will be available through the iTunes Store free of charge in early May. UN OBSERVERS ARRIVE IN SYRIA

The first group of six United Nations unarmed monitors tasked by the Security Council to report on the implementation of a full cessation of armed violence in Syria has arrived in the capital, Damascus to begin their work.

“The monitors’ early tasks include liaising with Syrian Government authorities and security forces as well as the opposition to ensure that all sides understand the role and work of the team,” UN deputy spokesperson Eduardo del Buey told reporters in New York.
