Friends of Pelham Bay Park

Submitted by ub on

Friends of Pelham Bay Park will hold an annual fundraiser this week at 6PM on 3/22 at the Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course Club House. Did you know that there's a small pond in the corner of the Playground for All Children? Help us build a pond viewing platform that is accessible for all children.

With your support, they will purchase a play piece and create an exercise loop that connects the pond, the playground, the gazebo and the Sensory Garden to provide a nature experience that all kids can enjoy.

WE MUST STOP USING PLASTIC BAGS NOW

Submitted by ub on

Most anyone who decides to enjoy a long walk through an area park, or perhaps walks barefoot on the sand at a nearby beach will undoubtedly find a few plastic bags before too long. This is a growing problem which has to be addressed on a global level.

Why can't shoppers stop using plastic bags? But the problem does not stop if everyone begins using other kinds of bags. Stronger, heavier bags, whether made of fabric or plastic, have a bigger environmental impact than standard supermarket shopping bags.

Single-use bags, both paper and plastic, represent a huge threat to the environment. This threat is not only related to the sheer volume of them ending up in landfill, but also to the resources needed to produce, transport and (occasionally) recycle them, and the emissions resulting from these processes. Single-use plastic bags are also well known for their interference in ecosystems and the part they play in flood events, where they clog pipes and drains.

According to published statistics, about 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year alone. That’s more than 1,200 bags per US resident every year. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags and only 1 to 2% of plastic bags in the USA end up getting recycled. Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.

The discovery of gold in California in 1849 prompted a huge spike in the demand for cross-country shipping. Wells and Fargo decided to take advantage of these great opportunities. In July 1852, their company shipped its first loads of freight from the East Coast to mining camps scattered around northern California.

GOVERNMENT IN THE SUNSHINE... NOT

Submitted by ub on

Not even close to government in the sunshine. It was more like moonlight madness in Albany this week, where lawmakers are asking The Governor and members of The NY Legislature to lay off those all-nighters.

It turns out that on Wednesday night into the wee hours of Thursday, the lawmakers passed pension reductions, redistricting and casino gambling... All of this was worked out while most of us slept.

Have you ever experienced sleep deprivation? It's used to confuse people to get them to do make decisions under duress. When it’s 5a all you want to get home and go to sleep.
