Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive patent for blue jeans. San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world's most famous garments: blue jeans.

Hundreds of thousands of bike commuters hit the streets of New York City this morning in celebration of National Bike to Work Day. Transportation Alternatives staff and volunteers welcomed commuters from all five boroughs with breakfast snacks and free goodies.

Bike to Work Day is T.A.’s top membership drive -- and today over 300 New Yorkers joined the movement for better biking, walking and public transit. If you weren’t able to join, it’s not too late to become a member and get your FREE set of front and rear bike lights.

Bronx Strong Arm

The New York Arm Wrestling Association (NYAWA) announced today that the Bronx Tourism Council and Bronx Week Food and Arts Festival will host the 29th Annual Bronxboro Arm Wrestling Championships on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 1 p.m. The event will take place on the Main Stage at Mosholu Parkway South between Van Cortlandt Ave. East and Bainbridge Ave. Bronx, NY. 10458 – General admission and entry is free and the event consists of both pro and amateur categories for men and women. Contestants are encouraged to register early.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr will host the Annual Bronx Ball, a party honoring this year's inductees into the Bronx Walk of Fame. This black-tie awards gala brings together the Bronx’s business, arts and civic leaders to welcome home Bronx-born celebrities.

The Bronx Ball pays tribute to those proud Bronx natives who Borough President Diaz will induct into the Bronx Walk of Fame the following morning. The Class of 2012 inductees are: Jazz Musician and educator Valerie Capers, Hollywood Cinematographer Sol Negrin, Hip-Hop Legend Fat Joe, and Actor/ Model Tyson Beckford.

BOAT FIRES

Firefighters from New Rochelle as well as from Pelham Manor firefighters responded to a fire on a 61-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht at the New York Athletic Club in Pelham Manor.
The Hatteras was on dry dock at the time the fire started.

The owner of the boat was taken to the Jacoby Medical Center in the Bronx to be treated for facial burns.

According to fire officials, the blaze was fully involved by the time they arrived. The Pelham Manor Fire Department was the first to reach the scene.
