Thanksgiving Comes Early?

Its beginning to look a lot like Thanksgiving... The outlook for American jobs and trade looks brighter, despite growing uncertainty with our overseas partners.

The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell a seasonally adjusted 390,000, according to the US Labor Department. That happens to be the fewest since April... Wow!

New Blight Fighting Initiative

Local community leaders will unveil a new blight fighting initiative this afternoon. They will announce a new initiative that will transform a graffiti covered site into a source of community pride.

MALL AT BAY PLAZA

It will be New York City’s most significant and exciting retail projects in recent memory. Prestige Properties has announced that it will develop The Mall at Bay Plaza, a new $270 million, 780,000-square-foot enclosed fashion mall anchored by a new Macy’s combined with an existing JC Penney. The three-level, state-of-the-art mall will be located on a corner parcel at Prestige’s thriving Bay Plaza Shopping Center in the Bronx, already the largest shopping center in New York City.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR PENN STATE

Penn State University President Graham Spanier, one of the nation's longest-serving college presidents, has been shown the door along with head football coach Joe Paterno.

The two were ousted in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal in which authorities said both of them failed to take corrective actions after an assistant football coach was accused of molesting a boy in a campus shower.

EAST BRONX HISTORY FORUM

Barbara Dolensek, the vice-president of the City Island Historical Society and administrator of the Nautical Museum will be the guest speaker.

Her topic will be City Island history, legends and folklore and should prove to be another standing room only event.

The Huntington Free Library, located at 9 Westchester Square and is adjacent to the Apple Bank for Savings just opposite the elevated station of the Westchester Square station on the IRT number 6 line.

Former IONA College Official Sentenced

Marie E. Thornton, the former vice president of finance at Iona College, Marie Thornton has been sentenced in Manhattan federal court to time served, along with and three years of supervision with 2,000 hours of community service.

The former VP plead guilty to embezzlement on March 9. U.S. in District of approximately $850,000 from the New Rochelle Catholic Institution for higher learning.

Thornton diverted funds belonging to Iona College for personal use by submitting invoices credit card bills for personal expenses to be paid by Iona College.

UNEDUCATED COMMENTS

US does not need educators like this NJ first-grade teacher who wrote that she was a "warden for future criminals" on her Facebook earlier this year. Ad administrative judge now says she should lose her tenured job.

The state education commissioner now has 45 days to accept, reject or modify the decision regarding Jennifer O'Brien.

The Paterson teacher posted her remark to 333 friends on March 28. But it was also forwarded and several of the students' parents, who saw it and made it abundantly clear that they did not appreciate the crude remarks.
